I'm starting my own business in graphic design and are conducting some market research on business cards. I would greatly appreciate it if you could answer my questions.
Do you have a business card? If so How often do you reorder business cards %26amp; how many do you order at a time?
I order about every three months and order 500 at a time, but my business is in marketing and direct mail so tend to send my card out quite a bit more than the average person.

Reply:I work in the legal services and Identity Theft Services industry. I usually purchase 1000 at a time. My company markets several services specific to individual markets so I also order business cards for each of those target audiences. The reason is that if Im talking to a Commercial Driver about legal services I dont want to give him a card that.has a focus on Identity Theft so I give him a card that says "COmmercial Drivers Legal Plan". If Im having a discussion about Identity Theft I dont want to give someone a card that primarily causes you to focus on lawyers. I have 3 seperate business cards and depending on who Im talking to and what we are talking about determines which card they get. I've tried it the other way (one card for every conversation) and it takes too much time explaining. I also order a different design every time I order new cards.

Reply:Frankly, it depends on your usage level.
If you can used up 1000 copies in 3 months, you can consider printing in mass of 1000 pieces.
However if it takes year to finish the 1000 pieces, then consider printing in lower qty. You never know if you need to change the business card information or design.

I was witness in a courthouse debate last year when a woman was charged with loitering and vandalism after placing her business cards on cars in parking lots at stores and a hotel. I saw firsthand how annoyed people can get when someone is brasin enough to just walk up and touch thier vehicle and place their personal belongings on someone's 'private property-thier vehicle'. Many people would not use a service or business that is tactless enough to grab someone's doorhandle, windshield wiper, ect and put things in them to make money for themselves. if stores or apartment managers find your trash lying on thier lots, after people toss them off thier cars in disgust, you get the littering bill. What if someone sees you, someone that isn't so nice and understanding? *alot of people are like that-watch the news* What if you set off an alarm? In front of people even? What if someone thought you were trying to break thier wiper or break into thier vehicle? Sounds extreme, but people these days are looking for reasons to sue or start a physical fight. i know that if you get caught touching government vehicles without a darn good excuse, you can get a nice fine, and they can take you in for questioning of "radical activity" sounds like loads of fun. How about just taking the safe route and putting up an ad? Even in the paper, bulletins, or telephone poles.

Any using one of their deals I just got 1,500 cards for $14.00 including shipping and handling. I would also recommend you pick up the book endless referrals by Bob Burg. It talks a lot about how to network to make new contacts, I'm only on chapter 4 but so far its a great book. Hope this helps.

The only thing I regret is I should have only gotten about 500. 2,000 is a LOT, but I got lured in because the price per card goes down so much with volume.

I would like to use a regular HP flatbed scanner to scan in business cards rather than spend more money for a cardscan or other business-card specific scanner. Is there software that can be used to import the card contents into Outlook or other standard format?

With the card scanners, you're really paying for the software and not so much the scanning hardware. Card scanner software does all the work of recognition for you.
Otherwise, follow the steps outlined by Asphalt.

Reply:What sorts of document editing programs do you have installed already? You can do a lot with MS Word or Corel WordPerfect without installing anything else.
Reply:Just got to Microsoft word or another word processing program and search for a template for business cards. They are easy to use, just enter your information and you are done. They have step by step instructions. Search "template business cards" in your help section of Word.
Reply:If you have Word on your computer, you can make them that way. Word has business card templates that you can choose from. Just pick one you want and type in your name and phone # on it.
Just go to a local business supply store and buy a pack of blank perforated business cards and put them in your printer just like you would a sheet of paper.
If you don't have money to buy business card paper, just use regular paper and after you have printed a sheet, cut it up in business card sizes. (business card paper is better because it looks more professional and is stiffer)
